Sports Law
Sports law is a combination of legal matters which include tort, contract, agency, sex discrimination, and tax issues as well as the areas of labor law, antitrust law, criminal law, and trademark law. These legal issues and areas of law are applicable to athletes and the games they play. Because professional athletes receive payments for their services, unlike amateurs, their profession is supported by a number of contracts and agreements, the parties of which are, athletes, promoters, agents, accountants, lawyers, advertisers, journalists, media outlets, and the governing organization of the particular sport. The laws however vary according to the status of the sportsperson and the game played. This can be a very complex area of law with a great deal of financial consequences for all parties involved. |
